Having “done” Vermeer, Dr. Fukuoka then began to think about his next subject. “I wanted to try “re-create” with an artist from Japan, my own country. But who could compare to Vermeer? I thought about a few possibilities, but there was only really ever one. And that was Hokusai”.
Brilliant Hokusai: Realm of Light was held in Ginza, Tokyo from January through May 2013, and has subsequently toured through the rest of Japan. It was also adapted for a very special exhibition in London—Hokusai Exposed, held at the Old Truman Brewery in October-November 2013. This immersive exhibition allowed visitors to see Re-creates of all Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji, which was particularly fitting given Mount Fuji’s June 2013 inscription onto the UNESCO World Heritage list as both a sacred place and a source of artistic inspiration.
